U.S.
Mulls Enlisting Members Of Saddam's Government
WASHINGTON -- In what would be a major policy shift, the United States is considering offering government jobs in Iraq to former senior officers of Saddam Hussein's military and the ousted Baath Party, administration officials said Thursday. Officials say the move could snare support from the powerful Sunni minority reduce the backing for Sunni guerrillas in tense cities such as Fallujah. The policy of blacklisting leaders of Saddam's Baath Party was designed to screen out criminals from playing roles in post-war Iraq, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said. But, Boucher said, people with clean records who were party members only due to their jobs shouldn't be punished. He said officials are trying to come up with "an equitable" solution. Coalition spokesman Dan Senor said people who worked at useful jobs and were "Baathists in name only" should not be left out of the rebuilding in Iraq. A White House spokesman said the administration wants to stabilize the government while still punishing those guilty of abuses. From: http://www.local6.com/news/3031171/detail.html |
