for overseas jobs in Iraq, Kuwait and other countries for
private military companies and defense contractors? I decided to
conduct some “field work” and find out.

Americans tell the newspaper
that lucrative pay, patriotism, and altruism lured them to Iraq, but the surging
violence against civilians in Iraqincluding ambushes and kidnappingshas
forced many to ponder just how dangerous the jobs have become in recent weeks. "We
get attacked day and night," says Lee Medina, a technician who repairs equipment
for the military. "All you can do is find a safe place to sit out the attack."
The
Halliburton Company says 30 of its employees and contractors have died in Iraq
in the last year, according to the newspaper. Titan Corporation of San Diego has
lost 13 employees and contractors over the same period. Despite
the risks, Americans continue to sign up for work in Iraq, the newspaper reports.
"I feel a little bit full of
nerves," says Hector Avila, who will work building Army camps for Halliburton's
subsidiary, Kellogg Brown & Root. "I don't want to leave my family but
it's something I have to do to make money."
